Pheromones
Pheromones are a naturally occurring chemical compound found in all insects, animals, and humans. When pheromones are secreted, they dictate sexual behavior and attract the opposite sex. Although odorless, pheromones are detected by scent.
In animals, pheromones are consciously detected over considerable distances and serve at times in place of spoken communication. They help animals mark territory, recognize mates, and signal sexual interest. For example, female dogs in heat excrete a pheromone to signal they are ready to breed. This pheromone can attract male dogs over a mile away.
In humans, pheromones are produced by the sweat glands in the armpit and around the genitals and send signals that are picked up by the vemeronasal organ (VNO), just inside the nose. The VNO passes these messages on to the limbic part of the brain which governs the most basic human sensations, like joy, anger, love, hate, and sexual arousal. In other words, we give off an odorless “scent” that sends signals to others.
